Your Contributions Matter

The Multnomah County Democratic Party’s annual Celsi Celebration is THE way to support the State’s most active and influential County Party!

With your support, we will continue to:

  • Provide seed money to targeted legislative races, helping our candidates get started right out of the primary gate
  • Direct campaign volunteers to those targeted races
  • Sponsor candidate forums and events
  • Network with ally organizations to recruit and support local and legislative Democratic candidates
  • Expand our Great Slate Card Drop Program which, since its inception, has distributed almost half a million slate cards in support of Democratic candidates and ballot measures
  • Expand our in-District engagement efforts to recruit new volunteers and voters
  • Offer candidate training and resources to Democrats running in local non-partisan races

Our County

A whopping 29 state legislators have turf in Multnomah County. Currently, only one of those seats is held by a Republican. It’s critical we support our candidates in 2020, and support our local Democrats running in the Special Election this May. Your sponsorship directly funds our candidate resources.

2019 Celsi Celebration - Saturday, March 9, 2019

Fighting for Equality, Justice, and Opportunity for All

March 9, 2019 is our night to celebrate. In the 2018 election cycle, we recruited candidates, then provided resources and training for the campaigns. We were on hand to help Democrats beat GOP rivals and we succeeded! On this night, with U.S. Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA), we honor our volunteers and lay a financial foundation for the future.

Your Support Really Matters

Since November 2016, we have had a dramatic increase in volunteer participation. However, the infrastructure to support this growth spurt isn’t there. This fundraising event helps. We can’t do this alone. When you sponsor the Celsi Celebration, your money goes to fund our efforts.

About Dick Celsi

About Dick Celsi

Richard (Dick) Celsi

Dick Celsi: Lifelong Volunteer and Leading Multnomah Democrat

An exemplary volunteer, Richard (Dick) Celsi (1933-1991) is honored yearly with our fundraiser and volunteer appreciation event. Celsi served as DPO chair, 1979-83, and led the county party two separate times in the mid-1970s and in the mid-1980s (1983-88).

Celsi was Portland born and educated. His parents immigrated from Italy, and he graduated from Central Catholic High School and the University of Portland. A U.S. Army veteran, he taught at parochial and public elementary schools in Ridgefield, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, for a total of 17 years. He operated his own landscaping business from 1976 until his death at age 57.

An Inspiration

To this day, fellow Democrats revere Celsi as a leader and volunteer. In 1991 Rep. Ron Cease described him as someone who “inspired, enriched and guided the political conscience of countless Oregonians for almost three decades.” A resolution of the Oregon Legislature praised Celsi’s lifelong dedication to “promoting tolerance, understanding and respect for the diversity of life at every level.”

Celsi’s life was short on time, but long on impact. Along with his loving family and many elected officials, he is remembered by current Multnomah County Democratic Party PCPs Mary Botkin, Moshe Lenske, Richard Meyer, Tim Rowan, and Valerie Thibeau.
